Failing to Figure

Civitas has published a report by Mervyn Stone, Emeritus Professor of Statistics at University College London accusing  the Government of "sidelining honesty and truth" in major policy decisions. He cites a variety of decisions based on calculations that are neither robust nor transparent. They include the allocation formula by which the Department of Health distributes £74 billion a year to primary care trusts, the wildly underestimated calculations made about the likely immigration from eastern Europe after the EU expanded in 2004, and the allocation of money to local authorities by the Department of Communities and local government.
