Gordon Brown's dubious immigration claims
In Gordon Brown’s now infamous conversation with Gillian Duffy, the widow from Rochdale whom he described as “a sort of bigoted woman” he said: “A million people have come from Europe but a million British people have gone into Europe”.
Where did he get these figures from? The chances are they came from the Long-term International Migration time series (available here)
This shows, under non-British immigrants, a total of one million for 2007 and 2008 (500,000 in 2007, 505,000 in 2008). That’s his million coming in. But under outflow of people with British citizenship, you have to count five years to get a similar total – 943,000 for 2004 to 2008 inclusive.
So two years of European incomers are balanced, in his mind, by five years of British outgoers. Somehow I’m not sure this would have satisfied Mrs Duffy, had he explained it in full.
